Scope

Farrell Construction was engaged as the Main Contractor by South Canterbury DHB to deliver a new Endoscopy Unit at Timaru Hospital. This commercial construction project involved transforming an outdated cafeteria on the third floor of the clinical services building into a modern 500m² facility, complete with procedure theatres, recovery spaces, consult rooms and waiting areas.

Process

Working in the heart of a live hospital environment brought unique challenges requiring proactive risk management. Farrell engaged daily with multiple stakeholders to understand operational needs and ensure hospital activities were not disrupted. Detailed planning and strict adherence to clinical-grade procedures were essential. All carpentry trades, from structural strengthening and concrete works through to cladding and fit-out, were carried out by Farrell’s own team to maintain quality and programme certainty.

Result

The project began with full demolition of the existing fit-out before progressing to upgraded structural steel frames, new partition walls, cladding, and clinical-grade finishes. Delivered over 12 months, the new facility provides state-of-the-art theatres and supporting spaces, significantly enhancing endoscopy services for the South Canterbury community.
